Jena (Germany), November 13, 2017 — Palm oil is widely used in the food industry, for example in products such as margarine, spreads, chocolate, or pure as oil. Various studies carried out during the last years have proven the presence of 3–monochloropropane–1, 2–diol (3–MCPD) fatty acid ester in refined palm oil, which is suspected to raise the risk of cancer. 3–MCPD is formed when fats and oils are exposed to high temperatures, in the presence of organic and inorganic bound chlorine. This often happens during the refining process.

Munich, Germany, May 11, 2016 – More than a decade after its first commercial introduction with the contrAA® family of instruments, High-Resolution Continuum Source AAS (HR-CS AAS) has become a well-established and appreciated analysis technology in routine, research, and academia.


Analytik Jena expands its product range of ICP-OES instruments (optical emission spectrometers using inductively coupled plasma) with a second model. With PlasmaQuant® PQ 9000 and PlasmaQuant® PQ 9000 Elite Analytik Jena now offers two systems customized to the analytical demands of applications ranging from agricultural, food and environmental routine analytics to advanced material analysis / research of saline, metallic, and petrochemical materials.

The superior performance of the PlasmaQuant® MS is achieved through the synergy of innovative technologies. From the next generation plasma system and dual-cone interface, to the ReflexION’s highly efficient, 3-dimensional focusing of ions into the high-definition quadrupole. They all work together to provide the world’s most sensitive ICP-MS. The simultaneous removal of photons and neutral particles reduces the background to less than 1 count, allowing the lowest possible detection limits to be reached.


With the introduction of the PlasmaQuant® MS, Analytik Jena has extended its portfolio with an ICP-MS. The newly developed mass spectrometer with patented solid-state RF generator for plasma generation sets a new industry standard in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The highly efficient RF generator produces a robust, balanced plasma with an argon consumption rate of less than 10 L/min plasma coolant gas. Effectively reducing argon consumption by half compared to conventional ICP-MS in the market.


The fast and reliable determination of chlorine in crude oil and related matrices is important for refineries. The chlorine content in crude oil and its fractions is the main reason of corrosion, which causes considerable damage to pipelines and tanks and leads to catalyst poisoning.
